Find the Best Sleeping Bag for You

Looking for the best sleeping bag? Look no further. We’ve got both an interactive chart featuring the top sleeping bags on the market and our own review of the top 5 sleeping bags below.

With these tools, you should be able to quickly and easily find exactly the right bag for your needs, whether you’re into camping, hiking, backpacking, or anything else that requires you get a decent night’s sleep away from home.

Remember that you’ll want to insulate your bag from the ground to get the most out of your bag. An air mattress or a piece of foam can go a long way to making sure you can stay warm down to the lowest temperature rating when you’re huddled up in your family tent or camping tent. Keep in mind that you should aim to get a bag with a rating at least 10 degrees lower than what you need, because it’s fairly common for these companies to “exaggerate” a bit on their temp ratings.

With that, it’s up to you – use the chart below or just skip down to our top 5 picks and get your next sleeping bag!

Top 5 Sleeping Bags

4 PC. US MILITARY GORETEX MODULAR SLEEPING BAG SYSTEM

4-PC.-US-MILITARY-GORETEX-MODULAR-SLEEPING-BAG-SYSTEM-smallIf you’re looking for the absolute best sleeping bag that you can buy, look no further. With a Military Sleep System, you get a wide range of options and versatility, outstanding Made in America quality, and the best overall sleeping bag system on the market today.

This is actual Military Surplus, offered at a major discount on Amazon.com right now.

With four layers or components, you will be ready for any environment you find yourself in. You can use the layers individually or you can combine them for total warmth and protection, giving you the best of all worlds.

Starting from the inside and working outwards, the system consists of a light weight Patrol Sleeping Bag, which is rated to 30 F. It’s 87” x 35.5” at the widest point, and narrows to 23” at the foot. This is the bag you’ll use on any three-seasons camping, hiking, or backpacking you get up to.

For a more hardcore, weather resistant bag, you’ll want to use the Intermediate Cold Weather Sleeping Bag that makes up the second layer of this sleeping system. This will protect you down to -10 F by itself (without zipping it into the Patrol Bag), and is slightly bigger at 92” x 37”, narrowing to 24” at the foot.

For outer protection, this set comes with a bivy sack (or bivy cover, if you prefer). It’s Goretex and 100% waterproof. This acts as a great protecting layer and can also be used as a basic shelter under the right circumstances.

By combining the two bags and the bivy sack, you are protected down to an insane -30 F, making this not only the most versatile sleeping bag, but one of the most cold-resistant.

The fourth piece of the set is a compression stuff sack. This is very helpful to minimize the footprint of the bag when you’re traveling or carrying it. When done right, you should be able to fit everything into a 1-foot cube. Quite impressive for the amount of stuff you’ll be packing up, but it does mean you’ll have to find an inventive way to carry it – strap it to the top or bottom of your pack or something like that, because it may not fit inside of it.

Because this is such an intense, multi-purpose sleeping system, be prepared for the added weight. Expect your full kit to weigh between 9.5 and 12 pounds. This obviously makes it less than ideal for backpacking, but for most other situations, you’ll be able to handle it without too much trouble.

Not only does this perform to the top standards, but it’s got a proven track record with a seriously impressive 4.8 out of 5 star rating by real users on Amazon.com

Coleman Big Basin Extreme Weather 0-20 Degree Sleeping Bag

Coleman-Big-Basin-Extreme-Weather-0-20-Degree-Sleeping-Bag-SmallColeman is a staple in the camping gear industry. From lamps to stoves to sleeping bags, they do it all, and they do it well.

The Big Basin Sleeping Bag is designed to give you a comfortable sleep between 0 F and 20 F, so you’re looking at a predominantly winter-based sleeping bag here.

Being able to sleep comfortably at 0 for around $50 is a steal of a deal, which is one of the reasons we loved this bag.

Size-wise, it’s very large, coming in at 92” x 39”. Even for a broad shouldered guy over 6 and a half feet tall, there is plenty of room in the Coleman.

The size and style of the unit leads to it being on the heavier, bulkier side, though. All told it’ll add about 7 pounds to your pack. In regards to it being bulky, the stuff sack it comes doesn’t quite compress it as it should, leaving you with a larger sized item to carry and pack. To combat this, lots of users recommend getting a separate compression bag (probably a Large size) to store it in.

This bag has double-batt, offset quilt construction that helps to eliminate cold spots, a decent hood (though it doesn’t close around the face tightly for some people), insulated chest baffle, and a fleece foot section. These features, combined with the 72 oz of Coletherm insulation and the great Coleman quality will keep you warm and comfortable when the mercury drops.

Kelty Cosmic 20 Degree Down Sleeping Bag

Kelty-Cosmic-20-Degree-Down-Sleeping-Bag-smallThe Kelty Cosmic 20 is an entry level down sleeping bag (duck down, not goose), but it is excellent quality and has a very good entry price for a down bag (particularly if you get it on Amazon.com).

The first thing you’ll notice is how light the bag is. Even the largest size, Long, is only 3 pounds. Obviously that comes from it being a down bag and not synthetic. This also means it will pack down very small (Kelty says it’ll compress down to 8”x13”), making traveling and transporting it a breeze. This is aided by the good stuff sack included with the bag.

This is one of those bags that you’ll have for years to come and that your kids will remember having gone camping with, even when they grow up. You’re getting outstanding craftsmanship and will be entering the down sleeping bag market with this 550 fill bag, which is a fairly significant milestone when it comes to your sleeping bag purchase.

Coleman White Water Large Cool-Weather Scoop Sleeping Bag

Coleman-White-Water-Large-Cool-Weather-Scoop-Sleeping-Bag-smallColeman makes our list again, this time with a 30 F to 50 F sleeping bag, perfect for spring to fall camping in most climates. This is a high quality sleeping bag meant for your basic 3-season camping trips, specializing in comfort and technology. In fact, many of the features are part of Coleman’s “ComfortSmart” technology series.

From a protruding comfort cuff around your head to ThermoLock that reduces heat loss around the zipper to FiberLock, ensuring insulation remains in place for increased durability and warmth, this bag is outfitted well.

Measuring 84” x 39”, it is on the larger side, and comes in at about 5 pounds for a moderate weight.

All things considered, the Coleman White Water Bag is an excellent choice for your “all purpose” sleeping bag. It’ll get you down to freezing if it really needs to, but specializes in giving you maximum comfort, quality, and peace of mind on most relaxed camping trips – all for under $40.

Wenzel Conquest 25-Degree Sleeping Bag

Wenzel-Conquest-25-Degree-Sleeping-Bag-Olive-smallWith a 4.8 out of 5 star rating on Amazon.com from actual users of the product, how could we leave this off the list?

The Wenzel seems to excel in everything – comfort, quality, warmth, and size.

The flannel lining makes it a delight to get into, and the 5 pounds of Insul-Therm fill will keep you warm when the temperature drops around freezing.

Wenzel calls it an 81” x 38” bag, which is rather on the larger side, so if you like to have some room to move around in your bag, this will be a good pick.

With easy roll-up features, offset quilt construction to reduce cold spots, and a self-reparing zipper, you get all the nice-to-have features you expect on a sleeping bag.

When it comes down to it, it’s really the fact that Wenzel has just done all the small things right with this bag, making it comfortable and long-lasting. Unless you’re going to be doing some serious below-freezing trekking through the woods, this is a dream of a sleeping bag that will do you well through the years.
