Top 5 Backpacking Backpacks

Deuter ACT Lite 65+10 Backpack

Deuter-ACT-Lite-65+10-Backpack-smallWith a perfect 5 out of 5 rating on Amazon.com, this just has to top the list for backpacking backpacks. The Deuter 65+10 is made out of incredibly high-tech and durable Deuter-Ripstop 210 material, focuses on breathability, and weighs just 5 pounds.

It is an excellent overall package with great size at 65 L or 3900 ci, and don’t forget the +10 with that extra pocket.

The frame is made of lightweight aluminum, so when you combine that with the top of the line material, you’ve got a seriously quality bag on your hands (or on your back, if you prefer!). It’s built to last and not just years, but hard work.

People of all body shapes and sizes will find something to like about this bag. One of the greatest things about it is just how adjustable everything is. It’ll fit you like a glove with some extremely easy adjustments. It sits fairly high, and of course with easy adjustments, this is simple to maintain – this adds an extra little bit to the breathable factor of this backpack.

A perfect rating from owners of this bag can’t be wrong, and for under $200, it’s one of the best investments you’ll make.

Kelty Redwing 50-Liter Backpack

Kelty-Redwing-50-Liter-Backpack-smallThis is Kelty’s best-selling backpack and one of the best-selling in the entire market, and it’s not hard to see why. The Redwing totally delivers.

Popular for some time now, this is the newer model of the pack. It’s very much one of those “working” backpacks. Not full of fancy features that get in the way and take up space, just a solid, 50 L (3100 ci) bag, ready to be put through whatever you can throw at it.

It’s only 3.3 pounds, and a load of thought went into the ventilation and cooling features, the support structure, and the hydration capabilities. This is a comfortable bag that keeps most of the load off of your shoulders for a more balanced and less exhausting hike.

The simple layout has the right amount and kind of storage, most of which is easily accessible, and makes a lot of sense when you’re packing up.

Actual users have given this a 4.9 star our of 5 star rating over on Amazon, which is a pretty solid indicator of how good this thing really is. 90% of users gave it a full 5 stars! You have to check this one out if you’re in the market for a light weight 50 L bag.

Osprey Talon 44-Litre Backpack

Osprey-Talon-44-Litre-Backpack-smallThe smallest on our Top 5 list, the Osprey Talon 44 L is an excellent light weight backpacking backpack that will suit you well for shorter treks like day trips and climbs. It won’t get in the way if you’re doing a lot of movement and need to be more nimble, so if you don’t need to be in the bush for days at a time, this will do the trick and then some.

It’s just 2.6 pounds and utilizes Osprey’s AirScape suspension system to provide you with the most comfort and take a lot of the work off of your back, so to speak. You’ll also find it uses mesh for ventilation in some areas, keeping in line with the high comfort level of this bag.

Even though it is a smaller size, you get a really good amount of storage, with lots of inventive uses of space on the outside of the bag, including the straps. There are lots of places to strap and secure your gear, and it can hold up to a 3 liter bladder for your hydration needs.

Like the rest of these packs on our Top 5, it’s been reviewed and given a major passing grade on Amazon – 4.8 out of 5, which is outstanding. More proof that this bag will do what you ask it to!

ALPS OutdoorZ Commander Freighter Frame Plus Pack Bag, 5250 Cubic Inches

ALPS-OutdoorZ-Commander-Freighter-Frame-Plus-Pack-Bag-5250-Cubic-Inches-smallThe ALPS OutdoorZ Commander is a serious unit. It’s got huge capacity at 86 L (or 5250 cubic inches), is 7.3 pounds, and man does it do the job.

This is a Frame PLUS Pack, so you can use it either with or without the actual pack bag. It’s perfect for hunting (even comes equipped with a rifle holder) without the pack, as you can load up a good amount of meat and even trophy, but easily transitions to being a monster bag that you can use for your treks deep into the backwoods. Fill it up with your camp gear, unpack, set up your camp, and then go out to hunt – you’ll get loads of use out of this combined frame and bag.

All this is not to say you have to be a hunter to get use out of this pack. That’s the whole point, it’s so versatile that you can rig up pretty much any configuration of gear and be comfortable and able to do some serious backpacking.

The OutdoorZ Commander has a 4.7 out of 5 star rating and has been given a perfect score almost 80 percent of the time. It really will blow you away, and you’ll hardly believe it’s just a hair over $100. Totally a steal and a bargain at that price, and it’ll last you through some pretty serious trekking.

TETON Sports Scout3400 Internal Frame Backpack

TETON-Sports-Scout3400-Internal-Frame-Backpack-smallThe Sports Scout 3400 is cheap (we found it on Amazon for under $75), light (4.5 pounds for a 55 L bag), and versatile.

Various adjustments make it comfortable (the fairly light weight helps with this, of course), and the straps are height-adjustable so a variety of people can get this to be just the right fit. Adding to the comfort are the contoured shoulder and back pads (including lumbar support), supported with aluminum.

It’s loaded with useful compartments like a sleeping bag area, zipper pockets, good access to the main bag, and more.

This is a great bag for a younger backpacker or someone who goes out once in awhile and doesn’t stay out for weeks at a time, and for this price and the quality, you really can’t go wrong getting this as an all purpose sort of pack. It even comes with a rain fly to keep your bag and contents dry if things get wet along the way.

The low price, 4.5 out of 5 star rating, and quality of this backpack meant that we just couldn’t pass up putting it on our list. Again, it’s perfect for the entry level to mid level backpacker who is looking for quality with great value.

Best Women’s Backpacking Backpack

Gregory Deva 60 Technical Pack

Gregory-Deva-60-Technical-Pack-smallThe Gregory Deva 60 is specifically built for women, and is by far the best and most popular pack we found.

With an updated AFS suspension, women’s specific fit, and thermo-molded back panel, this unit is focused on comfort but doesn’t give up other vitals to accomplish it.

The fit will be secure and snug thanks to some auto-fit technology in the straps and supports, which we thought was very cool.

Coming in 3 sizes, you’re sure to find the right one for you. This category best-seller is raved about by those people who own and use it – a near perfect rating! This 60 L bag will get you through a load of different backpacking situations, whether you’re roughing it or touring Europe. It comes highly recommended and we felt it was necessary to include it in it’s own category to help you with your search for the right pack.
